چکیده

COVER Confocal light microscopy image of a lateral root emerging from the main root (width: ~130 to 150 micrometers) of a young Arabidopsis thaliana plant (green, nuclei; red, cell walls). Lateral roots initiate deep within the primary (“mother”) root. Their emergence from the mother root is a highly regulated process requiring adjacent cells to shrink and make way for the developing lateral root. See page 178.

Evidence of absence or absence of evidence? A reanalysis of the effects of low-dose aspirin in in vitro fertilization.

OBJECTIVE To assess the conflicting evidence whether low-dose aspirin is beneficial in IVF and to evaluate the meta-analysis performed by Gelbaya et al. and reported in March 2007 in Human Reproduction Update, in which they found no effects of low-dose aspirin and recommended discontinuing its use in IVF. We present a reanalysis of the effects of low-dose aspirin in IVF and raise methodological...

Predicting the dynamics of bacterial growth inhibition by ribosome-targeting antibiotics

Understanding how antibiotics inhibit bacteria can help to reduce antibiotic use and hence avoid antimicrobial resistance-yet few theoretical models exist for bacterial growth inhibition by a clinically relevant antibiotic treatment regimen. In particular, in the clinic, antibiotic treatment is time-dependent. Here, we use a theoretical model, previously applied to steady-state bacterial growth...

The prevalence of intolerance for low-dose acetylsalicylacid in the secondary prevention of atherothrombosis.

Daily low-dose acetylsalicylacid (ASA) is prescribed to patients with atherothrombosis frequently to prevent vascular complications. In reports on complications and side effects of low-dose ASA use in the literature there is a range of definitions. We explored the incidence, characteristics and consequences of symptoms suggestive of ASA intolerance in patients on low-dose ASA. General practitio...

Procalcitonin to guide antibiotic administration in COPD exacerbations: a meta-analysis.

Challenges in the differentiation of the aetiology of acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) have led to significant overuse of antibiotics. Serum procalcitonin, released in response to bacterial infections, but not viral infections, could possibly identify AECOPD requiring antibiotics. In this meta-analysis we assessed the clinical effectiveness of procalcitonin-...
